About David Day
I spent the first half of my career building things. A BSEE from UCLA, years at Hewlett-Packard in its "In Search of Excellence" era, then a technology company of my own, Fastbit Technologies, which I sold to a company on the New York Stock Exchange. I made payroll. I made the calls that kept people employed. By every visible measure, I was doing it right.
What I hadn't learned was how to be present with the people closest to me. Success at work and closeness at home run on almost entirely different instincts, and I'd only built the first set — a lesson I learned the hard way, in my own marriage and fatherhood, fifteen years ago.
That recognition sent me back to school. I'm a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (MA, Counseling Psychology, Pacifica) and former Executive Director of Carl Rogers' Center for Studies of the Person, where I found the competence I'd never built: the capacity to actually be with someone, not just solve them. I've co-facilitated group therapy through the La Jolla Program for fifteen years, and I'm a certified Parent Effectiveness Training instructor.
You won't be talked down to here, or handed theory from someone who's only coached from the sideline. I built the first kind of competence the hard way, same as you. I had to build the second just as deliberately — and that's the part I can teach.
