Why isn't knowing what to do enough?
You've probably already read a book about this, or had the conversation, or been told exactly what you're doing wrong. None of it stuck the way it should have. Here's why, and what actually works instead.
01
The skill — DOING — Relationship Effectiveness Training
RET is a concrete, teachable set of tools — how to actually listen, how to say the hard thing without detonating the room, how to resolve conflict instead of just surviving it. It’s built on the same principles I trained in directly through Parent Effectiveness Training, and Dave teaches the training himself. This is the part that answers what do I do — and it works because you practice it, not just discuss it. Necessary but not sufficient.
02
The presence — BEING — experiential group work
Knowing what to do isn't the same as being able to do it under pressure, in the moment, when the old habits kick back in. That happens in a room — with other men, or with your partner — where the goal isn't performing insight, it's actually changing how you show up. Fifteen years running groups through the La Jolla Program taught me that men change fastest around other men doing the same work. This is the part that answers how do I actually become this. Relational, meaningful, paradigm shift happens here. In relationships with others.
03
What you can expect
Staying in the room when things get hard, instead of shutting down or walking out. Your partner feeling met, instead of managed. Being able to name what you want, not just what's wrong. A relationship with your kids that isn't running on autopilot. None of this happens in one session. All of it is achievable.
